The Big Picture

At this point I was looking the image as a whole. The version you see below is what I arrived at after finishing up my work with the new colors. Since the whole artwork was pretty dark I added a bright yellow glow to the center spiral.

I was happy with the new colors but everything looked much too dull. After a lot of thinking I decided to go back and add some new lines and shapes.
The picture below shows Sunset after I adjusted the colors and added a few more circles. I was almost ready to say it was finished at this point. However, the new circles didn't look too great compared to some of the more detailed areas of the artwork. I also felt like something was missing in the center.

After going back to sketching and line drawing one last time I came up with some wild abstract shapes to add to the background. I also did as much as I could to all the circular shapes to make each one look unique. I also ended up doing a ton of coloring work between these last two versions although it may be a bit hard to tell from these pictures.

I feel like I reached my goal of creating an abstract illustration inspired by Mural. What I like the most about creating abstract art is that there are no rules to follow. I like creating paintings that have a strange unfamiliar feel to them. Although I often find it to be the case that formal shapes shapes and patters help pull a piece of art together. In a way sunset represents what I like most about art, which is blending familiar shapes and images with total abstraction.
Digitally illustrations are very similar to pen and paper drawings. I have done a lot of sketch work in the past but I don't have many of them posted on my website. Making these new digital illustrations is a way for me to revive a lot of my previous artworks and even take them a step further.
