Adding Detail
I wanted the abstract 3D shapes to look more like a natural part of the environment. I put more shapes below the clouds and merged them into the background buildings.
Here is a close up of the airplane. The original design was interesting, but it wasn't recognizable enough as an airplane. I ended up making the plane thinner and smoother.
Color and Lighting
The light source in this painting is the sun in the background. I added a layer of blurry transparent lines on top of the painting to enhance the sky. Next I adjusted the hue settings to see how everything looked in different colors. I wanted to find some mixed tones and get away from primary colors.
The oversaturated pictures below are the result of different color options I tried out. To show off the brightness of the sun, I decided to give everything a yellow tint. I changed the colors of the airplane and structures individually.
I toned down the saturation and started balancing out the colors. I went for a more metallic look on the airplane and buildings. I made the shadows darker on some of the buildings to get them to stand out more. Now that the colors were set, I was ready to finish painting the smaller details.
